Pain Catastrophizing measures is the level of negative and stressful emotions and thoughts connected to ones chronic pain. It’s also a sign of how helpless the person with chronic pain feels and related to the level of suffering.

Research shows that a PCS score of 20 is about average for people on disability for chronic pain. In our group we started with a level of pain catastrophizing at 16.6, close to that average number. By the end of our six week CPR group our group members have an average pain catastrophizing scale score of 6.6, which is 15%, so less than 85% of people with chronic pain.
